In today’s society, learning to read and write are aspects everyone needs to have. You can’t get a decent job or even be considered to be successful in the community if you can’t read and write. That’s why they concentrate on reading and writing in school. I remember learning to read and write when I was a young girl. My grandmother taught me how to read. She would read me a book every night before I went to sleep. My mom, grandmother and granddaddy all taught me how to write. I was young when I was learning but I remember the times of day they would teach me how to read and write and how fun it was for me.
I remember learning how to read the most. Every night before I went to bed, my grandmother would read me a book. When I got a little older, I decided I wanted to read. She said she would teach me how to read. So, every night when she would read to me, I would mimic the words she said as she pointed them out to me. She started with this so I could get familiar with seeing letters. After about a week of mimicking her, she had me try to read a simple book. She worked with me and helped me. Once I understood and could read, I got to read a small book to my whole family. When I was done everyone was saying they were proud of me. That helped me and was important to know people wanted me to learn.
I would learn how to write before lunch, before dinner, and before bed. Before lunch, my grandmother would teach me. Before dinner, my grandfather would teach me. Before I went to bed, my mom would teach me. It was never repetitive. They all knew what I had gone over earlier in the day, so I never did the same words or writing with all three of them. Writing was a little more difficult for me than learning to read was. We started with letters, then my name. The hardest part for me was to put them together when I wrote. I could read them easier than I could write them. I eventually learned how to write.
One incident I remember in particular that was important in learning my ability to read and write was having more than one person trying to help me succeed. They were all encouraging me to learn how to read and write. Also, it didn’t get boring because it wasn’t repetitive. I also got to do other things besides just sitting in a chair trying to learn how to read, I got to go outside and have fun.
Another incident I remember is drawing pictures in the driveway with chalk, my grandfather telling me what I drew, and then I wrote what he said underneath the picture. Or, I would look in the sky, point then he would tell me what it was, I would repeat it, and write it down on a piece of paper. Then, he would tell me if I was correct or incorrect. This was important to me because this means I had another way to learn two new things at one time. I learned new birds and new objects in the sky, and learned how to write.
